LJ Friends, Books, etc.

I was looking at my profile this morning and I noticed my friends list is getting a little crazy. I tried to add a bunch of you back that I didn't have before since I'm trying out custom friends groups and I love them. I noticed two users have no entries and no friends besides me. I don't know whether I should feel flattered or creeped out. If you are one of those users, say hi plz.

I'm reading The Shining and it's starting off pretty slow. Lately I've been picking up books and putting them down. I started to read Wuthering Heights and I didn't even bother going through with it. If The Shining doesn't get any better I'll start on Sense and Sensibility or The Memory Keeper's Daughter. What are you guys reading right now?

Anyway. I really just wanted to share this beauty of a bicycle:

Friday night I'm going to see Where The Wild Things Are. This will probably be the highlight of my week. I'm also buying tickets that day to go to Halloween Horror Nights next Friday with my co-worker and some of my other friends. Do you guys have something similar in your cities?

I did all my homework for class a day before it was due. I guess I had too long of a break between summer and fall and it's taken me longer to get back into the swing of things.

Life is deliciously boring. I do tons of shit not worth writing about but I love it. Right now I'm planning a little trip because I need a vacation, I didn't go anywhere this summer and it would just be nice to visit some place new.

Work is good, friends are good, finances are good, everything is good, and there's nothing to really talk about. I'm reading A Million Little Pieces and it's okay. The writing style is different, I get it, but it gets old after a while. I bought Sense and Sensibility at Barnes and Noble on Monday and that's the next Austen novel I'm reading after Mansfield Park. It's taken me longer to read this book because I hate staring at the screen (I'm reading it online). I'd rather have the book in front of me.

I watched the entire series of Weeds in like two weeks, I'm so hooked. I love everything about that show and I'm a little sad that I have to wait and wait for the 6th season. Still need to catch up on Dexter. I was debating whether or not to just buy the season 3 dvd but I really want to get the box set for when it's all over :( Decisions. lol @ the things I have to decide on.

Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. They don't have to be the greatest books you've ever read, just the ones that stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. From [info]coriandersea
  1. Things Fall Apart by chinua achebe
  2. Frankenstein by mary shelley
  3. The Lovely Bones by alice sebold
  4. The Kite Runner by khaled hosseini
  5. Carrie by stephen king
  6. The rest... )

The Mermaid Chair

  • Aug. 28th, 2009 at 4:30 PM
Jessie Sullivan’s conventional life has been "molded to the smallest space possible." So when she is called home to cope with her mother’s startling and enigmatic act of violence, Jessie finds herself relieved to be apart from her husband, Hugh. Jessie loves Hugh, but on Egret Island—amid the gorgeous marshlands and tidal creeks—she becomes drawn to Brother Thomas, a monk who is mere months from taking his final vows. What transpires will unlock the roots of her mother’s tormented past, but most of all, as Jessie grapples with the tension of desire and the struggle to deny it, she will find a freedom that feels overwhelmingly right. --From Amazon

I decided to check this novel out because I liked The Secret Life of Bees (also by Sue Monk Kidd). To be honest, I'm surprised I finished it, because I just didn't enjoy it. Kidd goes overboard with descriptions, the big climax and resolution were wrapped up lazily, and the story was just ridiculous over all. The ending was cliche and retarded, considering what happened (she was unfaithful with a monk but then she goes back to her dipshit husband? What?) and the story was just a disappointment to me. But I did finish it, since I was already so far in to the story, and I'm glad it's over? Seems kind of harsh, but that's honestly what I feel about this book. Sorry Sue.

Angels and Demons

I just finished reading this book and now I understand what everyone was talking about. Fantastic book. It was cleverly written, kept me in suspense, and taught me a hundred things about history and symbology. A perfect recipe for an amazing book in my opinion.

Soon I'll be done with The Mermaid Chair and then I'll probably start reading The Shining(!!). I've also bought a couple of books this past week. I added them to my book list. Feel free to recommend any books :)

Twilight

  • Aug. 12th, 2009 at 9:17 AM
So I finally finished the book Twilight. I started reading this book about seven months ago as an ebook and never could finish it. The first chapter was not my cup of tea, but I forced my way through it. Little by little I read chapters here and there but never did much damage. I'd rather have a book in my hands than have to sit and read it on the computer. Then yesterday my co-worker lent me her book and I finished the entire thing in one sitting.

Here's the thing about Twilight. I had no idea what this series was about. Then people started talking. About how hot Edward was. How ridiculous it was that he glittered. The manipulative psycho romance he had with Bella, etc. So really, I had no inclination to ever read the book. But there were so many fans of the book and I thought, well, the least I can do is just read the damn thing.

Now I have finished it and... well, I don't think it's as horrible as people claim it is. The writing leaves much to be desired (it's kind of horrible, for the most part) and a lot of the dialogue left me rolling my eyes, but if you get past that, it's really just another book about vampires that is incredibly easy to read. It's not exactly on my Favorite Books list (not even close) but it wasn't as bad as people claim it is. The thing is, this is fiction. You know, not real? Bella and Edward's relationship is a bit much, I agree, but it's not real. I'm not attracted to the type of romance Meyer is trying to describe in this book, but then again, it's just a fictional story and I don't have to like it. If it were a memoir... then I'd have a problem.

So those are my thoughts on Twilight. Not the most amazing book out there, but a nice book to pass the time.

A New Home and Books

  • May. 27th, 2009 at 5:12 PM
Yesterday afternoon my sister and I went to see some apartments. We've been planning to move to a new place in August for some time now, and we had a list of apartments to see, but we just fell in love with the one we saw yesterday. The price is right (we cranked out all of the numbers and were amazed tbh), the location is perfect... it's everything we could've asked for. We are so excited and we can't wait to move. We're planning to move in the middle of July. It's a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms. We saw the apartment model with furniture so we were able to gauge how much space we would have and how everything would look with furniture put in and we were surprised at how spacious it all looked.

The actual model we saw is a bit different than the one shown on the company website. The cabinets were different, as well as the dining table and the little bar (nook?) area. The rest looks pretty much the same. The actual apartments are only 6 years old so they look nice and new:

Not bad for $700 a month, yeah? This upcoming month will be spent shopping for furniture and basic items. I already have my eye on a bunch of items from ikea (there's one about 40 minutes away) and I'll be posting them here soon no doubt, since I can't stop talking about it.

I finished reading The Lovely Bones two nights ago. It was on my favorites list for ages and I finally decided to re-read it when I bought it for my sister this past Christmas. I read it a long time ago and while some details were a bit foggy I remember loving it when I finished reading it. This time was no different. A little review, I guess. )

According to my book list I've read six books this year. Only two a month :( I'll be finishing Northanger Abbey very soon. I started Catcher in the Rye (so far I don't really like it =/), and as soon as I'm done with Northanger Abbey I'm going to read Mansfield Park. I tried reading Watchmen and didn't get far. I find myself reading a chapter of Twilight and not picking it up after about two weeks or so, which makes for very slow reading. Probably because it's an e-book, which I don't like much. I'd rather have a book in my hand.

Zombiez Hay

  • Mar. 8th, 2009 at 10:54 AM
So yesterday my friend Becky and I started reading The Zombie Survival Guide and I must say, this is some interesting stuff. We're reading a chapter a day together cause it's fun.

I love zombie movies although I've only seen a few (Resident Evil 1-2-3, Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead [does that count?]) but I do like them (suggest more zombie movies plz) and I think a zombie outbreak is totally possible. I mean think about it, we can make nuclear bombs, radiation, and we deal with viruses all the time... who knows!

Anyway, Becky and I have decided that we want to hopefully shack up in a castle/fortress near a grocery store where we'll create a bunch of boobie (hah) traps to keep us busy while we wait for the oncoming slaughter of half-living beasts.

In other news: DST sucks.

Frida Kahlo Book

  • Dec. 1st, 2008 at 7:25 PM
I just wanted to share my new book: Frida Kahlo, giving to me as a gift from my sister. She surprised me with it the other day.

Look inside! )
I absolutely love it. It has nice clear colorful photos of all of her artwork, plus a little biography. It's definitely one of my favorite things right now.

I can't believe it's already December. I've been working at the toy store for three months now, but it feels like three weeks. Time is flying and I can't get caught up. I still have a lot left to do before this year is over, and I doubt I'll have time.

Carrie, Moleskine

  • Nov. 26th, 2008 at 10:51 PM

I got Carrie by Stephen King yesterday and I finished it today. I LOVED it, it was so much better than Black House. It almost felt like I was reading a different author since the styles were so different. I really enjoyed how the book was told from different viewpoints, whether it was a person involved with Carrie, a witness, an article, a future book, etc. I just really liked it. I felt so bad for Carrie and wanted so badly for her to get her revenge (as awful as it was) but I think it was a really good book from start to finish.

I also got my moleskine a couple of days before that and I absolutely love it. I love that I open any page and it just lays flat and I love the little strap on the outside to keep it nice and tightly closed. I've actually been keeping up with it every night before bed and I don't find it tedious or lame so we'll see how long that lasts.

I updated my icon journal with owl icons a few days ago. I made a ton more icons that I'll be posting soon.
